Just released to the iTunes App store today is the new app called “The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien” by vPoint. The app is quite simply the entire novel of “The Hobbit” to be read anytime you wish on your iPhone or iPod Touch. It is listed for $0.99 so I purchased it to try it. Sure I already own a copy of the book but a digital version for 99 cents is a deal if you ask me.
The book is broken up into chapters and has a bookmarking option to keep your place. There is also the option of changing the font and the size of the text to your own preferences. It’s really a basic ebook reader program with a single book. While I would love to be able to import this to my amazon kindle library, I realize that probably won’t happen here so I’ll just keep wishing for my electronics to play together nicely.
Like I said, this just came out today and so I just purchased it. I haven’t had a whole lot of time to play around with it, yet. I can tell from the start that there are some text issues in the story where there are some strange characters. I’ve seen these before where there were special character issues (I run into it in my work moving stuff from word processors to HTML formatting). For 99 cents I can certainly over look these little errors although if it cost any more I may not have been so blah about it. You can see an example of the off characters if you look in the middle of the second to last sentence in the screenshot to the right.
VPoint, the creator of this app, has many of these little one book apps out there including The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Winnie the Pooh. All are priced at $0.99 so this is not a new business for them. I can’t help but wonder if their time would of been better spent building one app that allowed me to download these books at a cost as I don’t see me cluttering up my iPhone screens with a bunch of single use book app icons.
