LOTRO Summer Festival Guide 2012

August 23, 2012

Festival Guides

Summer Festival is running this year from August 23 – September 10, 2012 . This guide is here to help you find all the events available.

The currency of this festival is the Summer Festival Token. Collecting these can help you buy the goodies listed in the rewards section below.

SummerFestival[1] The big events for the Summer Festival are the Hobbit and Dwarf races and the fishing quests. There are other quests available in case these two aren’t your cup of tea. The quests are mostly broken up into four major regions in Middle Earth. These are where you will find the festival vendors as well as other festival activities.

What is not included in this guide The festivals of Middle-earth include certain quests that appear with each and every festival. Please see our guide on these General Festival Quests for help with those events. This would include the:

What is different from last year?
The short answer to this question is “not a lot”. However, there are some small differences and some bugs to this year’s festival that may be worth noting.

  1. The festival races have been moved to instanced areas instead of being out on the landscape. You get to these areas by using the festival horse. They are located by the Michel Delving stable master in the Shire and the Thorin’s Gate stable master.
  2. The Hobbit and Dwarf race tokens have been replaced by the new festival standard “Festival Tickets”.
  3. Currently the Dwarves are sort of disappearing instead of racing. I recommend skipping this event for the time being as you will not be able to complete it.
  4. Tokens are awarded even if you lose the races.
  5. Losing More than a Wager quest has been moved inside with the Dwarf Races
  6. The Shire and Thorin’s Hall  festival vendor has been moved inside with the races.

  • Lucky Day at the Races Winning the Dwarf and Hobbit races (see descriptions below) with each racer will grant you the title “Lucky Duck”.
  • Much Drinking, Much Running Win with each of the Dwarf racers 3 times. Reward is 6 Festival Tickets.
  • Much Eating, Much Running Win with each of the Hobbit racers 3 times. Reward is 6 Festival Tickets
  • Too Much of Everything Complete the Much Drinking and Much Eating deeds. Reward is 15 summer festival tokens, the /heave emote and the title “Picky Picker”
  • Celebrating Sunshine Complete all the fishing, finding lost things and firework quests for the title “Sunshine”.
  • Fortune Festival Fish Catch 10 each of the rare festival fish: Silver Haddock (Thorin’s), Celebhal (Celondim), Golden Redfish (Bree), Starry Flounder (Bywater), Reward: Title “Rare Fish”
  • Consume Consumables: Saffron’s Lipstick Use consumable 300 times and you will be able to use this affect as a permanent skill (no consumable required)
  • Consume Consumables: Vile Vittles Use consumable 300 times and you will be able to use this affect as a permanent skill (no consumable required)
  • Consume Consumables: Foul Blast Use consumable 300 times and you will be able to use this affect as a permanent skill (no consumable required)
  • Consume Consumables: Fire Breathing Use consumable 300 times and you will be able to use this affect as a permanent skill (no consumable required)
  • Consume Consumables: Essence of Toad Use consumable 300 times and you will be able to use this affect as a permanent skill (no consumable required)
  • Consume Consumables: Monster Fare Use consumable 300 times and you will be able to use this affect as a permanent skill (no consumable required)

Invitation to the Lithe Festival

Quest Giver: Letter sent through in-game mail
Rewards: Summer Festival Guide, 1 Summer Festival Token

Bree-land Festival Grounds

Fireworks for the Festival

Quest Giver: Robert Greenverge
Rewards: Summerdays Fireworks or 1 Summer Festival Token
Repeatable: Daily

You are to collect fireworks from all the festival areas and you have 1 hour to do it. Not a difficult quest and super easy if you are (or pair up with) a hunter. Each Festival area will have a Fireworks vendor that will sell you their race’s fireworks.

You can pick up these fireworks ahead of time just while wandering around doing other festival stuff and have it ready when you go to Bree to turn it in.

Thorin’s Hall

backpackForgotten Errands

Quest Giver: Ambi
Rewards: 1 Summer Token
Repeat: Daily

Ambi has a list of missing items that is scattered around Thorin’s Hall. There are 5 items you need to find. They aren’t too difficult if you just travel around every hallway. For a hint on the tricky one, look near the bridge near the waterfall.

Losing More Than a Wager

Quest Giver: Skalli (inside the Dwarf race instance)
Rewards: 1 Summer Festival Token
Repeat: Daily

Skalli is very unlucky when it comes to betting on the Dwarf races and in a tantrum has thrown and lost some of his items. He will hand you a report that will go into your inventory that will will give hints where to find his lost items.

Note this has the same disappearing act that the Dwarf Races has where when the race starts, this NPC will disappear as will the items he’s looking for. He will reappear after the invisible Dwarf races finish and you can complete the quest.

Missing Things

Quest Giver: Lalfor
Rewards: 1 Summer Festival Token
Repeat: Daily

Lalfor has asked you to help him find his poems and gifts for his love, Nedhrien. They are scattered around Duillond and all pretty easy to locate.

The Shire

These quests are located by the Party Tree in the Shire just north of Hobbiton.

Too Much Festival book

Quest Giver: Foxglove Tunnelly
Rewards: 1 Summer Festival Token
Repeat: Daily

Foxglove has misplaced her things in the festival ground and asks you to help find them. They are all in the party tree area. To help with that final item I’ll give you the suggestion to go visit Samwise’s old Gaffer.

Pro Tip: using the delete key will target these items when you are near them

Going Hungry

Quest Giver: Melilot Hayward
Rewards: 1 Summer Token
Repeat: Daily

Melilot has lost all the food she brought with her and hands you a list of what she did that day to help her find them all. You will find the list in your inventory that gives clues where to look for her lost items.

Fishing Quests

Fishing is the most efficient way to collect Summer Festival Tokens (unless you supremely lucky at the festival races and have lots of tickets). I’ve also heard of member’s of the Inn League or Ale Association running all those repeatable to turn in their badges for tokens.

These fishing quests originate from the Bywater fishing area (same area used by the Farmer’s Festival). There are prerequisite quests that have to be done here before it opens up the fishing in the other festival areas.

Belongings Gone Fishing

Quest Giver: Mosco Smallburow
Rewards: 1 Summer Festival Token
Repeat: Daily

Mosco has a big fishing tale for your and then asks you to help him find his lost items. In your inventory you’ll have an item called “Mosco’s List” that has all the items on it and what was he was doing when he lost the item to help you track the items down.

To the Fishing Hole

Quest Giver: Ned Longbottom at the Party Tree or Maggi in Thorin’s Hall
Rewards: The Basics of Fishing
Repeat: No

Quest sends you to Neddie Grub in Bywater (31.2S, 70.0W Shire).

Neddie is a festival barterer.  He has several lawn decorations and a wallpaper selection. You can see pictures of these in the Summer Festival Decoration and Furniture Guide.

Stocking the Pond

Quest Giver: Neddie Grub
Rewards: 3 Summer Festival Tokens
Repeat: No

Neddie asks you the best place to catch an assortment of fish in a certain order.

  • Amberjack in Thorin’s Hall – head towards the waterfall on the west side of the hall.
  • Luillim in Celondim on the docks
  • Drum in Bree. Fishing in the pond near Pierson’s farm south of Bree-town.(33.0S, 49.8W)

The Fishing Hole

Quest Giver: Neddie Grub
Rewards: Fish you catch are bartered for tokens and decorations
Repeat: Daily
Prerequisite: Stocking the Pond

Neddie asks you to catching as many fish as you can in 10 minutes. Turn in your extra fish to Neddie for additional tokens.

Repeat: Daily
Prerequisite: Stocking the Pond

Gaellien asks you to catch as many fish as you can in 20 minutes. Turn in your fish to Gaellien for extra tokens earned.

A River Runs Through It

Quest Giver: Láfi, West side Thorin’s Hall near water
Rewards: Turn in fish caught for bonus tokens
Repeat: Daily
Prerequisite: Stocking the Pond

Láfi asks you to catch as many fish as you can in 20 minutes. Turn in your fish to Láfi for extra tokens earned.

The Pond

Quest Giver: Will Hindmarsh
Rewards: Turn in fish caught for bonus tokens
Repeat: Daily
Prerequisite: Stocking the Pond

Will asks you to catch as many fish as you can in 20 minutes. Turn in your fish to Will for extra tokens earned.

Trading Fish for Tokens

For you expert fishers who have more fish than tokens, head to your local fishing quartermaster to be able to turn in your fish for extra Summer Festival Tokens.

Trading Tokens for Fish

For those of you have more tokens than they know what to do with and dislike fishing: Ernwyd Brandybuck at the Party Tree (29.8S, 71.6W) will trade tokens for the special fish (Celebhal, Silver Haddock, Golden Redfish or Starry Flounder). The fish are used at the quartermasters for special rewards (see rewards section below).

Ticketed Events

FestivalHorseThis year’s races are taking place inside instances rather than out on the landscape they were last year. Head to Michel Delving or Thorin’s Gate to find the Festival Horse that will take you to the Hobbit and Dwarf races.

Note: Currently the Dwarf races are not operating properly.  The festival horse will only appear while betting is open and at the race start, the dwarves will disappear and the quest will not finish. You can however successfully collect your 2 Festival Tickets every 2 hours from Jorfi.

I suggest collecting your tickets and spending them on the Hobbit races for now.

Collecting Festival Tickets

Hobbit RacesThey have removed the race tokens and have replaced them with the same Festival Tickets we have been seeing the last few festivals.

The Festival Ticket givers are on separate timers. That means you can get up to 4 tickets every 2 hours through the NPCs in game.

If you want to continue to repeat these quest without waiting two more hours, you’ll have to buy another Ticket from the store (for 100 TP). It works a bit similarly to buying more picks during the Treasure-Hunt or Badges from the anniversary festival. You’re just buying a chance to win more Summer Festival tokens from the races.

Taste of Hobbiton: Off to the Races

Quest Giver: Dodder Twofoot
Rewards: 2 Festival Tickets
Repeat: 2 hours

Keg-Hopping Race: Off to the Races

Quest Giver: Jorfi
Rewards: 2 Festival Tickets
Repeat: 2 hours

Playing the Races

ConsolationThe two races operate the exact same way even though Hobbits are racing after food and Dwarves are racing for beer.

The races run every nine minutes from when the race starts until the next race starts. Three minutes before the race starts, you will be able to place your bets on your favorite racer with the Race-master.

If you win:
Turn in the quest for 6 Festival Tokens.

If you lose:
Click on the Consolation Present near the Race Trader to collect 1-2 Summer Festival Tokens just for playing.

Win or lose, you can bet again so long as you have Festival Tickets.

Festival Mounts

There are two mounts available in-game. The 2010 Pale Summer Golden Steed is available for purchase in the LOTRO Store. For information on how to earn these horses, see our General Festival Quest Guide.

WOW you are fast, :) This blog totally rocks! :)

Thank you for all the work you do in providing us players with info. It is very much appreciated. :)

  2. Joshua Says:

    I like the new hat!

  3. Gliredhel Says:

VERY nicely put together, once again; CSTM never lets us down.

    Kudos — absolutely fantastic.

  4. Shyndarkly Says:

    Epic guide again, thanks Goldenstar

  5. Elahedor Says:

    Great guide, as usual :)

Fireworks for the Festival rewards either the Summer Fireworks or 1 summer fest token.

  6. erunineriol Says:

If I have read correct, there are NO new deeds to last year at all?

  7. Tathlian Says:

Thank you for the great and quick guide. I know you love us cause you fished for us. :)

  8. Melnordan Says:

Oh boy horse #61 looks really nice :)

  9. Chamian Says:

Afaik only 2 maps for Cartographile – Eriador deed are available in the Summer Festival.

  10. Cosmetic Lotro Says:

Awesome guide again, thank you Goldenstar (and Ketani)! I hope they get those Keg Races working. The races are the most enjoyable part of the festival. Almost fell asleep on my keyboard fishing last night. Must. Have. All. Bonfires.

  11. Flatfoot Says:

    It just isn´t a proper festival without a “Goldenstar Guide(tm)”. ;)

Though you might take a peek at the pics for the horsies again.
I´m pretty sure it´s the 200HP one that has a saddle not just “the blanket”.

    • Avatar of Goldenstar
      Goldenstar Says:

Maybe its because it’s 6 am but I do not understand what you mean about the horse pictures. It’s a picture of the horse standing at the horse farm.

      • Flatfoot Says:

        Ack, my bad.
I thought your pics were mixed up, but Turbine has actually made the steed with the proper saddle a stupid 100HP horse.

As things are going lately at Turbine it wouldn´t surprise me if somebody over there erroneously exchanged the “days” with the “fest” steed.

Thanks for making me check again. Won´t be grinding for that horse then.

  12. Goreamir Says:

When the dwarf races are fixed, I hope the two races are spaced out evenly so you can go back and forth between them and not miss one of them. After the short waits between games in recent festivals, the wait for the next race is excruciatingly long, especially when you are losing every time, lol.

    • Avatar of Goldenstar
      Goldenstar Says:

I would suggest for an improvement for next year is to also have a horse that travels between the two races so you can catch both.

      • Goreamir Says:

True, it’s already a pretty quick trip as it is though, just a swift horse between TH and MD.

      • Erunineriol Says:

Last year you could wait with your bet just before they walk through the finishing line (the nsc respawns..)… This bug was fixed this year..

      • Crell of Riddermark, Vanguard Says:

Add a horse to the party tree, and it’d be pretty much complete.

It looks like originally they planned to let you get from the tree to the taste of hobbiton, but that didnt get finished (See the Testing door in the Entrance to bilbo’s Haunted area, which isnt usable)

  13. Avatar of Artemis
    Artemis Says:

    Bowing in awe of Goldenstar!

How the heck did you do the guide so fast?

I don’t have to worry about putting a baby hobbit to bed and I still couldn’t do everything last night to see it properly – let alone write about it!

  14. susan Says:

You all really should be paid for this professional work you do for all of us. Thank you so much. I love the new yard stuff, am I mistaken or are they animated?

  15. IrenIvy Says:

Thank you very much for furniture examples!

Smoking bonfire is a very cool item :)

  16. Piper Says:

As usual, well done on the festival guides. I always come here first to get the skinny on what’s what! Keep it up!

  17. evredred Says:

First thanks for the guide second is it possible to get 300 of all the items you can use on people plus furnisher and all the cosmetic items in one festival?

    • Avatar of Goldenstar
      Goldenstar Says:

I would believe it is possible if you and all your alts complete all of the festival dailies each day. You can add in doing the Inn League and Ale Association and use those badges for extra tokens. You have two weeks so I believe it is possible.

  18. Akmatov Says:

Many thanks, your site is the one I always come to when I cycle back to LOTRO, just invaluable.

  19. Akmatov Says:

Am I missing something or not – the Summer Fest seems much harder to collect Token than the Fall Fest. In the Fall there is apple bobbing and the chests in the hill that yield tokens daily if you just cycle through. In the Summer, I haven’t figured out how to collect any number of daily tokens fairly quickly and there are some very nice goodies to exchange tokens for.

  20. John Says:

I bow down to the greatness that is Goldenstar =P

Excellent work as always and so fast as well =)

Thank you for all your effort to keep us informed.

The World would be an emptier place for lotro players without this fan site.

  21. eorolf Says:

is the Golden Tree Summer Cloak dyeable? does the background change?

  22. Firebrand Says:

Thanks for the wonderful guide! Huzzah!!!

  23. susan Says:

I love the new yard items, they are pretty awesome. I found the token rate a bit daunting at first, then realized that it adds up pretty fast if you do all the quests for the festival. In one day I was able to get several items. Being able to trade in fish for tokens helps alot, plus earning a ‘consolation’ token per race adds up quick considering you get race tokens every couple of hours.

  24. Alfa Says:

Hello, this guide is awesome :)
I am thinking of buying a fireworks launcher from the festival, but I have a question. Is it a permanent decorative item or is it one use?

I apologize if I am asking this under the wrong article.

    • TG Says:

They are permanent decorative yard items that you can lite and re-lite as many times as you want. I’ve got 3 in my yard! :)

  25. FoxFire Says:

I have to question the Consolation Prize being 1 – 2 tokens.

I’ve now received at least a couple dozen consolation prizes and I have yet to get more than a single token from it.

Can anyone confirm whether they’ve gotten more than 1 token from the Consolation Prize box?

    • FoxFire Says:

Scratch that. I finally got 2 tokens, but I should point out that it seems to be EXTREMELY rare to get 2 tokens.

Out of maybe 3 dozen Consolation Prizes I’ve opened between a few different toons, this is the only time I actually received 2 tokens.

  26. FoxFire Says:

I’ve been logging on as many 2 hour intervals as I can to grab Festival Tickets on ALL of my alts (even storage alts who can run festival content to earn tokens to buy unbound festival items). I’m accumulating quite a stash of them!

How long before Turbine makes Festival Tickets expire at the end of a festival? Use them or lose them. After they realize that they are having trouble getting people to buy these tickets for 100 TP each in the store?

    • susan Says:

If it like other festivals the tickets will roll over, just have to store them somewhere in inventory or barter wallet. I used some race tickets from last year in this event.

  27. Nonya Says:

There appears to be new wallpaper at the Bree pond quartermaster (Will Hindmarsh) — the “Summerdays Wall” and “Summerdays Music Box” both seem to be new items this year. Each costs 10 summerfest tokens.

I haven’t checked them out to see what the wallpaper looks like, and will probably avoid the musicbox (like most other festival musicboxes, it is bind-on-acquire).

  28. Edugorn Says:

I dont have the Deed Lucky Duck cos i cant complete the Keg´s Race.

I won the hobbit race 3 times with one of the hobbits but the deed Much eating Much Running did not appear.

I must complete the Lucky Duck Deed first to get the “3 times win” deeds?

If the answer is “yes”, then i must wait for the keg´s race fix first?

    • PL Says:

Edugorn, got the same problem here, won 3 times with Daffodily and Burdy but the deed “Much Eating, Much Running” does not appear. It would mean that it requires the Lucky Duck as precondition. I think I’ll stop spending festival tickets for this and will stock them until they fix the dwarf race, which is something that should alread been done. The drunk hobbits bug in the farmer’s faire took two weeks… and that required a single line of code !

    • sonne Says:

I thought it might be a hidden deed (doesn’t show until completed). Won with all four hobbits three times each and one extra time each in case my accounting was off.

      No deed.

I don’t think Lucky Duck would be a precondition, though. Prolly has it’s own bug.

  29. Squishier than thou Says:

    Wonderful guide as usual! <3

What do all the Consume Consumables do? I know what Fire Breathing does, but not the others :)

    • Shardis Says:

Monster Fare – Produces swirly question marks over your head like when a mob has a pathing problem (the anti-exploit visual effect)

Foul Blast – Cant remember on this one

Fire-Breathing Potion – same visual as the /firebreath emote but can also set folks on fire (does not need to be targetted)

Essence of Toad – hypnotic pinwheel over your head that causes everyone around you to fall down (the effect that folks who hate forced emotes dislike the most)

Mugs of Triple Strength Brandy – same effect as the Inn League Keg house item from the Spring Festival but you can carry it with you (teleports to location randomly selected from a list of possibles)

Mugs of … Liquid – same effect as the Inn League Sinister Keg house item from the Spring Festival but you can carry with you (teleports to location randomly selected from a list of possibles – different locations than above)

Saffron’s Lipstick – (targetted item) person you use it on gets a drunk effect for a minute

Vile Vittles – Causes you to barf a yellow area of goo right in front of you (looks similar to slow area slugs produce)

  30. Tinuveille Says:

I absolutely love CSTM! <3 You guys are absolutely amazing!!! You always have such beautiful pictures and well-written posts; it most definitely comes in handy when it comes to certain festival quests that I don't understand. I recommend it to everyone that needs help. Keep up the good work guys! Happy trails!

  31. Firebrand Says:

If I did Stocking the Pond fishing quest last year, is it still available for me this year?

  32. Kevin Says:

An easy way to earn Summerfest Tokens is to complete the Inn League Delivery Quests. If you are kindred with Inn League, you can turn in 1 Badge of Taste and get 3 Summerfest Tokens. In a few days, I earned 150 badges of taste = 450 Summerfest Tokens. Of course you don’t have to spend them all at once, you can wait for the Harvest Festival in a month or so.
