Riddles in the Dark

Riddles in the Dark is a bi-weekly podcast series by Dr. Corey Olsen (The Tolkien Professor) and David Kale. Discussion will focus on the themes, characters, and events of Middle-earth and lay the groundwork for intelligent speculation about how the book may be translated to film. Each episode will culminate in the hosts making a specific prediction about the upcoming films, to be proven or disproven when the films are finally released.

More information on RITD can be found at http://www.mythgard.org/exclusives/riddles-in-the-dark/

Frandoc:

I appreciate the effort you have taken to makeyour two videos; your presentation is excellent, and I hope you will want tomake more. There is a difficulty for me when I try to watch them though.Everything looks smeared and blurry. It’s really strains my eyes and I havetrouble following your audio. When Merric makes a video I can select 720 forviewing, and everything looks nice and crisp. Yours only go to 360. Could youuse higher quality settings in the future? Even 480 (like Pineleaf used in hisMC video) would be a big improvement, although that is still not very crisp.

What instrument were you using in the open tapping video?

Your enthusiastic fan always,

Willowing:

Hello Goldenstar!

I listen to you and Merric every week and am very interested in your Dum Group. Do you have a link to a short description of what it is and how it works? If not, is that something you can share? I’d love to help start a similar group for our kin, but I’m not clear how you do it. I think you discussed it in a podcast some time ago, but can’t find it. I don’t even know what the “Dum” stands for.

Thanks for the awesome website and weekly podcast!

Ivaneus Full Super Long Achievement:

Anyway over the last two weeks I’ve gotten a lot done. First and foremost is Draigoch! I went twice and on the second run we killed him! It was only during the looting ceremony (seriously, it took forever) that I found out that I had shown up with not one, but both of the Legendary items I was using fresh from their reforges with no points spent on things like . . . base damage. Needless to say I was pretty chastised. But I still walked away with a shiny new teal necklace for my Guardian and a Helmet Token! In between those runs I joined a group of people running Barad Gularan multiple times to grind some deeds out. We had an absolute blast in there and were smashing the Rogmul boss, who gave us plenty of trouble when I did it at 65, with ease, even with some people dead. The highlight was definately when we had “4″ people in there because one was dualboxing a level 38 Runekeeper, and I tried to keep him alive against the Rogmul’s AoEs with Shieldwall. He almost made it. But somehow one of the Rogmul’s abilities was able to kill him through my shieldwall, so he perished until we dropped combat and rezzed the poor RK.

Then last Saturday, when you were recording the episode about dying in the Watcher’s mouth IIRC, I was leading a band of Tribe members and others out in the Ettenmoors. Sadly, we never had anyone to really fight but it was fantastic to see a large number of the Tribe out there since basically everyone left LOTRO for SWTOR when that launched. I also managed to get my Reaver to Rank 6 (Yay!) and finished off a slayer deed on my Warleader: Elf Killer, which netted him a few commendations and, more importantly, a shiny new title. I also spent a while trying to solo the Captain General in Tirith Rhaw after a Warden soloed Lumber Camp. As soon as the camp fell and we realized what had happened, I called dibs, but instead a group charged in and flattened the camp and ignored my call of dibs. So I set off for Tirith Rhaw with the goal of getting someone to help me make it to the top. But while I was on my way there the Warden logged onto his creep (presumably to brag about his soloing prowess) and was flabbergasted to see LC was red.

He asked who flipped it and the [OOC] conversation went something like this:

Brug soloed it.
Warden: What?!?
Warden: What class is he?
BA
Warden: What Rank
Me: 3
[OOC]: It’s easy, you just kite and hit.
Warden: WHAT?!?!?
[OOC]: He was actually 2, he hit 3 when the keep flipped.
[OOC]: Yeah, BAs are way faster at soloing then Wardens.

You get the picture. So anyway I managed to get into the keep and amde great headway while some kind creeps kept watch on the door and exterminated any freeples that poked their noses in.

But eventually a number of them made it to the top and then the creeps arrived too, and then the Captain General reset on me at about half health and a good ~14 minutes in. So I was forced to quit the attempt, but I would’ve had it if I hadn’t been interrupted.

Later on that evening (I think) I was leading a raid and the freeps were not in abundant supply, so we went into the Delving of Fror to try our luck against the Rogmul Gaergoth the Unbound. It was a looong slog but we managed to win with almost no deaths (but that one Reaver just kept getting punted into the lava . . .) and had a great time of it. I tanked the whole fight like a boss while still leading the group, target assisting, and healing. It was fun.

I also finished editing an episode and finally dusted off Ep 16 and recorded a bunch of stuff for it. I then made an ominous blog post about that, took off to Maryland to cheer for family members in the tough mudder (I was too late to sign up), stood in the rain for 4 hours, missed the Achievement post, came back, and have now caught up to the present where I am writing an email. =P

And that’s my achievements for this week (well, actually the last two weeks).

About Goldenstar

Goldenstar's primary happiness in games is anything that involves festivals, parties, cosmetics and pie. If there's any time after those things to kill bad guys, so be it.

Oh man, you guys cracked me up this week!

In reply to Willowing: We do a similar levelling group to the Dums, but with more beards, how we set it up, and what its aims are, are listed here, and also some of our early ‘homework’ and run ovjectives. It might be a little help.
