(Updated) Dev Diary: Critical Defence in Update 10

battle_erebor_04The Developer Diary for Critical Defence changes in Update 10 were rectified yesterday.  For those who may not be aware, last week Turbine (and in-turn me), mistakenly re-posted the Update 9 changes to Critical Defence.  I’d like to thank everyone for letting us know about the mistake and informing us what the actual changes were.  We really appreciate the support of the community!

The (Real) Changes

Kelsan states that the changes are:

Critical Rating now increases your Critical Magnitude in addition to increasing your Critical Hit Chance. This provides a reason for Critical Attack builds to continue invest in Critical Rating after they reach the Critical Hit cap.

The goals for these changes were:

  • Maintain the counter-stat nature of Critical Rating and Critical Defence
  • Give Critical Rating value beyond the Critical Hit Cap.
  • Simplify effect-based skill crits by unifying skill and effect critical chance.

What does this boil down to?  It means more damage for those investing in “Critical Attack” builds for both the DPS and Healing.  Players will earn around 1% bonus critical damage for every 300 points of Critical Rating.  Like most stats there will be a rate of Diminishing Returns the higher your Critical Rating becomes. Kelsan gives some examples of the scaling in the diary and how this all will work.

Critical Defence rating has also been modified.  It now provides less damage reduction against Critical Damage.  Instead of gaining around 2% for 100 points of Critical Defence, it will now provide around 1%.  All classes will now be able to itemize for Critical Defence as well with Tanks being able to “maintain the edge”. That’s not all though, all monsters that are signature and above will also have Critical Defence.


For those concerned about anything critical related, this is a “must read”.  For those who aren’t then I would suggest skimming it, but taking note of the Q&A at the end of the post to get a basic overview of what’s going on.   To me the changes seem to be pretty good though.  As always, let us know what you think in the comments below!

    The thing is we don’t have any example on how much enemies are protected with critical defence. Is it a value like 400 or 1.200?

      Agreed. I wish they’d be more transparent with their numbers on how all stats are calculated. It seems almost like pulling teeth to get that information.

    I think the best way to think of critical rating/critical defense is that it is like finesse. Finesse lowers the targets BPE and allows you to hit more often. Crit defense lowers crit rating, and lowers both crit chance and crit magnitude.
