CSTM to End with Episode 200

June 14, 2013

General

It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce the end of A Casual Stroll to Mordor. Merric and I have been talking for months now. It’s been something weighing very heavily on our minds.

Basically the long and short of it is that CSTM is a lot of work and we are having difficulty giving it the time and attention it needs to keep the standards we have for it. Part of it is just life is busy and full of stuff and some of it may be a bit of burn out as well.

We didn’t make this decision lightly and we are sad to let this go but we feel we must.

The Plan

Our plans right now are to discontinue after our 200th show. That puts the final show around June 29th – Not too far from our 4th anniversary in August. We are paid up for the podcasting host for the year so that will remain available for some time. The site space we are graciously granted by Middle-earth Network and we were told will not be shut down anytime in the near future.

Maybe after a while we may come back? Maybe not but I could see us missing it. We love CSTM, the audience we’ve played with and interacted with for years and yes – we still love LOTRO. I suspect if we do continue to share on the blog it will be less news based and more “I found this cool thing to share” type post.

Thank You

CSTM has been an absolutely marvelous adventure for us. LOTRO players are warm and inviting bunch who embraced us and accepted us for our silliness. We’ve had overwhelming support for our podcast and our blog and for our events such as the Fellowship Walk for Child’s Play.

Players donate codes or turbine points to us just to give away or players even donated to us just because to help us pay for hosting expenses. The support was probably more than we deserved and we are very grateful.

Thank you every single one of you. Whether you just listened/read or took the time to contact us, we appreciate you being there.

The CSTM contributing writers have helped us were an absolute blessing and we couldn’t say enough thank them for helping CSTM grow. Articles, guides, cooking, photos, cosmetics, and more were all given to us freely by others passionate about sharing their love of LOTRO. Thank you.

Turbine for their support and tolerance of us. I’m sure they didn’t always love what we said but hopefully they know we love their game. All the LOTRO team: Thank you for making a game we adored so much we decided to record our discussions on it!

While we maybe stopping all the activity on the blog and podcast, you can still catch us in game. We are Meredoc and Goldenstar on Landroval!

I could not believe it when I read it ?oÔ?

It really saddens me to think CSTM will be over soon, you brought us so much reasons to love this game,
    you will be missed.

However, having a few children myself, I know how hard it can be to keep up with passion, when there’s so much to do IRL.

Thank you for all your great job, and the way you opened our eyes (mine and my 13 years old daughter’s) on the best parts of this game, that can be so easily missed..

May LotRO live for long years, thanks to you
and may you finally find more time to sit down and enjoy the game like heaven on middle-earth ^^

    Cheers from France,

I think any type of endeavor on this scale has an expiration date. I mean, in the time you guys have been working away on this blog and podcast, my wife and I have tried and quit SEVERAL other MMOs. Including returning to LOTRO hardcore and burning out again.

It’s a sad turn of events, but I’m sure it’ll significantly lessen the headaches you guys have had to deal with.

Thanks for all your hard work! It was great having a repository of information like this, and I’m always disappointed that other games have nothing to compare. (Though maybe Dulfy.net comes close, for all you SWTOR and GW2 fans out there.)

Now lets drown our sorrows in hobbit piecakes!

Oh noes! Seems like I need to make a concerted effort to be around for the podcast on the 29th… Soccer matches have had me missing most of the live ones and not playing LOTRO much has kept me from really keeping up completely on all the news… but this still bums me out! Love you guys and the spin you bring to the game… but understand that life with a growing hobbit can be hectic! Hopefully I will see you guys in game in the future and in the chatroom on the 29th!

This makes me very sad! I’ve learned so much from CSTM, and still check it regularly for news/links and refer others here as well. Frankly, if I hadn’t found this site a couple years ago I doubt that I would have stuck it out with LOTRO — you had suggestions/advice/insight which I sorely needed so thank you!

What what what????? I am in shock right now!!! I have to go throw up….200 is a nice round number tho. That’s more dedication than I could have done. Sure would have been nice to have seen 300, 400, 500… Ugh… What will you do with all of your free time now??? Put more time into shakeitoffcast? You two have been a blessing to this gaming community. The empty space you will be leaving behind will be vast. Going to throw up again…

I echo Maxlin’s comments. I am very sad to see the blog go, but certainly understand as it seems like you guys would be putting in a ton of work to do this, get some gameplay time, and oh yeah kids and work and real life! I hardly find time for the gaming let alone having to host a site like this.

    Best wishes Meredoc and Goldenstar!

Sad, sad news. CSTM has been my primary source of LOTRO information and news about current issues.

Perhaps someone (maybe even The Hosts) is able to recommend a successor, not necessarily with a podcast, but maintaining regular updates of current info about LOTRO. Most of the blogs I find are rather on post-once-a-month schedule…

Very sad to see you go. I’ve not been following you since the start, but since I found you I’ve avidly watched and read what you’ve had to say on the blog. I’ve not found another site that has such a variety of news/views/comments/etc about the game – the ones I found all seem to focus on one aspect.

I second one or two comments I’ve seen about the possibility of finding someone who could oversee the continuation of the blog (if not the podcast) – it would be a way to keep it going.

I truly hope you will return at some point, and good luck with your gaming and lives! :)

I’m shocked it lasted this long. Lotro is a good game but to have to do podcasts and update a blog daily for years when there are many better games out there takes alot of hard work. I know Merric runs or used to run another show and I know he likes and plays other games. Very brave to have run it for this long, I got immediately bored and burned out with lotro after maybe 2 years of playing.

    Hi Merric and Goldenstar!

I just want to say that i was a thankful listener to your great podcast and follower of your blog. It was always a pleasure to listen to you!

I am quite sad that you are closing down this podcast/blog but i can understand you well. One thing is time-management between family and jobs, which should both be prioritized. And the other is a lack of interest in the game, that nearly everyone suffers under. I myself have once in a while a break and play something other but come always back because of the people. So maybe you will come back in a less time-consuming way. I would love to see that in the future.

Till then, all the best to you and thanks for your great and inspiring work!

    Dear Merric and Goldenstar,

I respect your decision to end the show, but it still makes me sad. You set the bar so high, not only for LotRO podcasts and web sites, but for all video game podcasts and fan sites. I have always looked at your show and site as what I wish the shows I’m on were like. You were so welcoming to Steve and I when we took a spin at LotRO podcasting, we were so impressed with your kindness and generosity with your time and advice. There’s no one on the internet more classy than you two. I wish there were more folks like you around. Please stay on Twitter with updates about Baby Hobbit!

    Dear Goldenstar and Merric,

When I started playing LOTRO I was a bit disappointed that there were very few community sites with resourceful information about the game, then I found CSTM and it was an inspiration to learn more about Tolkien and Middle-Earth. I had a lot of fun listening to the podcast and I’m a bit sad with the goodbye. Hope you keep the Twitter account. I wish you all the best.
