I was already snuggled in bed for the evening and decided to flip through my feed reader while settling in when I found an article on Kotaku that got me so riled up I jumped out of bed to come and tell you the news.
Here’s the section of the article I found particularily interesting.
Several weeks ago, Turbine moved a number of domains, includingmiddleearthshadowofmordor.com, middleearthgame.com,middleearthshadowofmordorgame.com, shadowofmordor.com, and shadowofmordorgame.com, onto its servers, seemingly suggesting some sort of new gaming development set in Tolkien’s universe. The Saul Zaentz Company—who control an assortment of media rights for Tolkien’s fantasy novels—filed a trademark registration for “Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor” for an assortment of items including games, and another registration for “M-E Middle Earth” in relation to “online chat rooms” for “participants of multiplayer computer games.”
Now the author of the Kotaku article is suspecting a new yet unannounced game by Turbine that will be shown at E3. It certainly is a possibility.
Warning: This is where I go into complete hypotheticals. I have no facts.
Just dream with me here people.
However, let us pretend with gleeful anticipation it is for our beloved LOTRO. It may not be as far fetched as seems at first.
Back in 2009 we had an article where LOTRO player Heiko shared with us domain names registered to Saul Zeantz/ Tolkien Enterprises that included domain names such as http://www.ridersofrohan.com which of course came out just last year. So they do register domain names years in advance like this!
Shadows of Mordor could be for us guys!
I’m certain it is still not close. I mean we know we have Helm’s Deep this year and naturally we will want Turbine to also take us to Gondor before the black lands but oh-em-gee guys!
Back in 2009, we thought the http://www.firesofmordor.com may be the future. Ideas and plans can make themselves clearer after four years so is it possible the name changed? Fires of Mordor still is registered to SZ/TE and not yet in use. Perhaps a two-parter similar to Rohan?
Oooooooooooooooo or maybe Shadows of Mordor doesn’t actually refer to us going into Mordor just yet. It’s the teaser outside the gate. Like Osgiliath? Minas Morgul?
Now to bring us back down to earth a bit, a big reason I can see Kotaku’s estimate of a new game plausible is the servers aren’t blank. If you attempt to go to the URLs you are greeted with a login screen. It makes me think there is probably something on the other side ready to see that hasn’t been unveiled.
I still like to think it is for my LOTRO but I’ve got the optimism and stubbornness of a Hobbit. We will see…
