Out-of-Game

Preface: Let me state first off that I know that this is not MMO-related; heck it’s not even game-related. But nevertheless we are all consumers of media in one way or another which usually includes tabletop games, mobile apps, books, music, television, and movies; among other types.  This article is meant to explore that media so that we can inform each other about such type of media lest they suffer the same fate as Firefly (R.I.P. fair friend).

2013-07-26 12.11.06I don’t watch a lot of television that’s broadcast live; mostly because we cut the cord a while ago.  Since then we rely on our Roku and Apple TV to provide us content through Netflix, Hulu, CBS, NBC, and other Internet streaming options.  And although some people can’t fathom how we can live without live television it works out really well for us.  Plus it can lead to the discovery of some past that we might have missed such as Dead Like Me, or even some current shows such as Falling Skies.

For those who may not have seen the show yet, Falling Skies is a show centered around the human survivors after Earth has been invaded by aliens.  No, this isn’t a terribly new concept, but it’s done incredibly well. The character and plot development is done incredibly well.  Sure, some of the plot is foreseeable, but there are certainly some good twists within the writing that I have enjoyed  immensely.

The acting is also really top notch as well.  Noah Wyle is one of the main leads and he does a good job of portraying not only a moral center for the show, but also a vengeful and loving father.  Will Patton, Wyle’s military counterpart within their band of survivors, also brings a lot to the show in the form of a man not only driven by his duty to keep the survivors alive, but a desire to strike back at the aliens for the loss of his family and his world.  The rest of the cast is great too from the clever anti-hero John Pope to the “freed” alien abductee Ben Mason.  All-in-all it’s a great show that’s well worth investing some time in if you’re even remotely interested in science fiction television and I highly recommend you checking it out.

It’s available from the following sources (Season, Format, and Episode availability may vary):

Goldenstar Note: There is a Falling Skies Video game in the works for the holiday season by TNT and Little Orbit gaming studios.

This might be the most underrated show on TV. Nobody I know watches it, but I find the quality is better than some popular shows (walking dead). The filler episodes really stood out this season (not good). The main episodes are still amazing. The special effects get better each season. Compare how cgi the mechs look in season 1 to the current season. Still look cgi, but not like crap anymore.

Thanks for writing this. More people need to start watching

Wyle was always a favorite on early ER seasons, so I should give him the benefit of the doubt here. I’m always a little scared away by dodgy special effects in shows like this. It’s often an indicator of the quality of the rest of the show (ie Sci-Fi original series), but I’m always looking for a new show to marathon, so perhaps I’ll give this a shot! Thanks for the recommendation!
