I reported last week about the pet collecting with the Rift Summerfest. Yeah … well. Now you pretty much are all caught up on what I did this week in Rift. Yup, still collecting pets. I have a complete pokemon-gone-mad-obsessive-compulsive-desire-to-have-them-all!
Luckily, my collecting is nearly at and end. I have two more to collect. JUST TWO. I would be embarrassed to tell you how many hours I have spent sitting around hoping for a pet to appear for me to collect.
The last two are in slightly too dangerous zones for me. I’m only level 42 and the mobs in the first area I tried to travel to are level 48, angry. and easily kill me. So I’m trying to catch a few levels before I try those again.
I really made a show of my hunting, too. Since I was camping out in the area looking for the pets, I made tents with my survivalist skills and sat patiently under it while hitting my pet collecting macro. The tents also accumulate rested experience while out in the wild but I only really did it for the aesthetics of it. I was camping spawn points… get it?
I’m not going to lie, the waiting was not fun. The white squirrel and the mini mordant were the absolute worst for me taking a couple days each of just trying to find them. It was a lot of tv watching in the background and I would do anything to amuse myself like kill wildlife, fish, open nearby rifts, or bore all my guildmates with my chatter.
All the waiting was totally worth it when I would find the little guy though. Nothing can replace my squee of joy when I find the animal and make it mine. I am not really doing anything in game but I am one super happy gamer and that’s all that matters.
I have gotten a couple levels even despite me sitting around doing nothing. Some of the exp is from the rifts, or doing daily summerfest fish turn ins but I think a lot of the experience was from discovering the areas and opening up the map in all these zones I’ve never been to before.
The Critter Catch List
I didn’t include it in my last post but I’ve been asked often so here’s a complete list of the catchable pets for Summerfest.
Some frequently asked questions I’ve gotten about capturing these little friends:
- Is there a quest?
No. You just find them on the landscape and can catch them without any quest or prerequisites.
- Is it just any critter?
No you are looking for specific critters with the names from the listing above. Unusual squirrels or random coyotes aren’t going to work.
- Where do I find the critters?
Each one has spawn points at in the zone it is associated with. The resources I’ve been using for locations are this forum thread and Rift Zam (search for the critter name). You will need to know how to use the coordinates, /loc and waypoints on the map (or if you have a good add-on that helps you with your mapping) to find the spot. After that it’s a waiting game. You cannot cause them to spawn.
- How can I easily target them?
Some of the pets are quite small and hard to see. Your best bet is to make a quick target macro. I actually just made a single macro that had a list targeting each of the critters on the list. Each zone was only going to have one from that list and I could get in the habit of hitting a single key to search the area. I even had baby hobbit hitting the macro while I was cooking breakfast! The target range on the /tar command is quite large, you will not need to be standing on top of the recommended spawn location to target the creature.
- How do I catch them?
When you locate the critter a icon will appear on your screen that allows you to trap them. You will need to be near them to catch them. My best advice is target them and put them on follow (/f). When they stop running hit the button and then scream your head off when it is yours (last part optional).
- Can I catch more than one?
You can collect the pets more than once. There is a cool-down timer on the trapping skill but if you catch the spawn early you can catch it a couple times – I’ve been able to capture three times before the pet de-spawned. You can only collect one but these pets are account bound so you can mail the extras to your alts and not have to sit through the hunt with those characters! (Thank you Hobmeister!)
Dancing with Squirrels
I did this last week but I was so stupidly excited about the pet news I didn’t share it. Lauralwyn and Kippie told me about this achievement and knew I had to do it. My guildees so know me!
This is my title in-game now. Goldenstar, Dances with Squirrels
