LOTRO, LOTRO News, Videos

Turbine has a press release announcing their 5th expansion for The Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) for November 18, 2013.

Featured highlights for the expansion:

  • Experience the Battle for Helm’s Deep – Fight to defend Helm’s Deep starting as early as level 10, when your character enlists as a soldier in the Battle of the Hornburg, the most epic conflict yet in The Lord of the Rings Online.  Earn rewards for your contribution to the war effort – win or lose, your skill makes a difference!
  • Explore new landscapes across Western Rohan – Explore the Westemnet of Rohan and rally each of the five ridings as Rohan returns to glory. Traverse the capital of Edoras, mysterious Dunharrow, and the fortress of the Hornburg within Helm’s Deep.
  • Advance from levels 85 to 95 – Experience 10 new levels, from 85 to 95, with new skills and completely updated class specializations. Both mounted and un-mounted combat will challenge you as you war against the evil forces of Saruman.
  • Continue the Epic Story – Encounter beloved characters such as Aragorn, Éowyn, and Éomer. Restore King Théoden to his rightful throne while you defend the peoples of Rohan at Helm’s Deep.

A quick reference for frequently asked pre-order questions:

  • The pre-order is available up until launch of November 18th.
  • You must pre-order before launch date of November 18th in order to get the pre-purchase goodies.
  • Pre-purchase goodies are granted immediately. Not on the launch date.
  • You can not pre-order in-game with Turbine Points. The Turbine Store will have in-game offering of the expansion at launch.
  • The Helm’s Deep Expansion is NOT included in any sort of VIP or Lifetime status. If you want it, you have to buy it. All players.
  • Check out upgrade offers are only available when purchasing the pre-order. If you didn’t pick it up when you pre-order, you missed it.
  • There will not be retail box copies of Helm’s Deep to purchase. This is digital only as were the last two expansions.
  • Cosmetics (both character and war-steed) are not able to be dyed. See @toarda tweet here and here for pictures of the sets in game.
  • The Crystal of Remembrance is a single use item that each of your characters will receive. It is available in the LOTRO Store currently.
  • There are no new instances currently planned with Helm’s Deep. Turbine is placing all their bets that the new Big Battle system will be the bees knees for our adventuring needs. [See Q10.]
  • The Epic Story is tied to the Big Battle System and will not be free for all players. [source]
  • The housing update is not part of Helm’s Deep but it is planned for this year [source]

When they say “no new instances”, does that mean no new instances at all, or that there will be an instance cluster that’s released next February?

  2. Gimp Says:

If anyone preorders and could tell me if :
    1) Does the XP cloak will stack with the older tokens?
    2) Whats the deal with the legendary level cap increase? Is it the same thing as the scroll of delving? And is it just a one time use scroll or auto applied to all items you equip?

Thanks to anyone who has any info on these.

Do people think there will Black Friday deals again this year? It’s only ten days after the launch date this time.

  5. Zhiriel Says:

Are the items in the legendary pack for lvl 85 weapons or 95?

They are the universal store items so they should be usable for any level. The items are bound to character [Source]

    • mrtoad Says:

While I haven’t ordered the legendary pack yet, in the past all LI upgrade items from the legendary pack were for the new max level cap in the future expansion. Think about it logically — it wouldn’t make any sense to market legendary item boosts that would only be good for a few months then invalidated by the new expac. However, if you do order the legendary upgrade for RoR, make sure you don’t use those items on your current gear–I’d personally save them till I hit level 95 and get a really nice 2nd or 1st age item.

      Hope this answers your question.

I’d really like to get the legendary pack, I’m just trying to figure out if the 3 star lit crystals + scroll delving + relic removal scroll + premium relic pack + $13 hobbit movie ticket are worth $40 total. I think they are, but I’m not 100% sure. I’ll probably end up buying it anyway cause LOTRO is my favorite pc game of all time and I want to support Turbine. [Yeah, I know, I'm a hopeless fanboi :) ]

The Legendary Pack really shows it’s value if you have a lot of high level characters. Most of the goodies are for legendary items (level 50+) but every character you make now and in the future will get these items.

It’s really going to be a personal choice of if you have or plan to have enough characters to use the items. If you are the type that makes a ton of low level alts that don’t go much of anywhere (/guilty) then probably not so much.

Note that they are bound to character so you can’t just make a million alts and have an infinite amount of these items for your high level toons.

  6. Tule Says:

FYI, because so many people were confused about this last year. Most of the “bundled” extras are available without pre-ordering. The list above clearly distinguishes between “pre-order” bonuses and regular parts of the expansion or bundle.

For instance “Crystal of Remembrance” is NOT a pre-order bonus, it is always present in the Premium Edition even if you buy it after release. Last year I heard several players say that only did pre-order to get the crystal.

Also just general advice: the pre-order is valid for many weeks still, there is no need to buy it immediately today and then regret it tomorrow.

  7. Goreamir Says:

Does the legendary item pack those items to all of your characters?

  8. Comment Says:

It only took 30 days for the Rohan expansion to be 50% off. Still if you have many alts preorder items might be worth it.

  9. Cuuniyevo Says:

What I’m curious about is whether the scaling back item will continue to level up as you do, or whether it just ties itself to whatever level your character was when you got the pre-order.

  10. Tinker Says:

According to Sapience on the forum (see pasted below) we must buy the new Rohan expansion to get the rest of the EPIC story. That is a huge departure from the past. All epics have been open to every player, even f2p’s. This is very disturbing imho. I’m a VIP and was going to buy the expansion, but now am having second thoughts. After reading what Sapience wrote I’m not sure how my experience would be different from a f2p/premium player’s. No perks for me I guess. Maybe I’ll keep my money. :/

    Sure thing.

Requires purchase of the Helm’s Deep expansion pack:
Battle of Helm’s Deep (Epic Battles).
    Western Rohan/Helm’s Deep Content (Quests).

Does not require Expansion Pack Purchase:
    Class Changes.
    Level Cap increase.
    Additional Crafting Tier.

    Wow. :(

  11. susan Says:

at first I was a bit excited about this, then saw the price. 60 bucks for an expansion pack. no way. for 60 bucks i can get several awesome new games (steam sales) or start a sub with a new mmo that doesnt have the same tired obsolete engine.

I do think the cosmetic items look pretty good tho, and who wouldnt want to experience helms deep. I hope that it generates continued interest in the game even tho I wont be participating

  12. Lorgelas Says:

Man that big battles system better be awesome.

  13. Aragorn Says:

I’m hearing some horror stories coming out of bullroarer regarding a number of changes to the system that are a major departure from the past. I highly suggest people hold off buying this until NDA is lifted.

  14. Rufusstan Says:

Sadly this leaves me very underwhelmed.

When the expansion brings major changes to all classes (add to that not being a fan of trait trees), and the main selling point to the expansion being a new and untried game system, this might become a crossroads moment for me. At the very least I’m waiting to see a lot more detail on both of these before considering buying.

If the idea that the Epic quest-line is being taken from free/premium players is true, I think that might be the final straw. With half a dozen FTP games on my hard drive, and a huge Steam library to work through, its is not like there are not options to compete with the expansion.

Until the NDA is lifted you’d be best to ignore any info that’s labled as coming from bullroarer be it good bad or otherwise.

But it should be no surprise that a beta has bugs and issues because beta isnt a launch ready product at the start of that testing phase.

After Rohans dodgy preorder launch that had me phoning stateside to query a refund and turbines uturn it’s good to see that they seem to have actually done some double checking of info they put out. Hopefully for them this time the launch date won’t be pushed back and wont require the sectioning off into multiple parts.

Sadly as I find mounted combat to still be pretty awful at high population times I’d already decided to not preorder. So I’ll no doubt be one of many pottering about on lower level alts while the initial rush to edoras happens and maybe catch it in a sale later on.

The lack of epic story means there’s no point to go there other than sightseeing or a game of hunt the turbine icon. That one addition does seem to indicate where they think most of the players focus will be and if it was free they’d lose a lot of presales.

  16. Deac Says:

Any word on the steed’s stats?

    • edwar368 Says:

Steed is +62% speed increase and +200 morale
I personally prefer function over form and so never ride anything that’s not +68% – It doesn’t seem quite right to me when Turbine try to flog you (or even give away) a “special” mount that’s slower than 68%

  17. Tom Says:

Will it be possible to buy “+10 quest log slots” also in the Lotro Store for TP?
