Vraeden Goes to Dragon*Con, Part 2

September 10, 2013

Community, Events, General, Out-of-Game

There’s really no coherent theme to this article.  Just some random thoughts about Dragon*Con and an excuse to post more pix.

Things I noticed this year:

Lots of Scarlet Witches and Harley Quinns.

Not enough Spider-Man cosplayers.

Too many Waldos.

Deadpool & Mystique

When did Deadpool become such a popular cosplay character? There were like 50 of them together for a picture.  We need more slave Leias and scantily-clad buxom women in chain mail that covers nothing, not guys in red body suits carrying guns!

Hi . . . I, uh . . . really like your . . . er, . . . I mean . . . that's a nice . . . ah, excuse me . . . I need to go to the restroom.

There was an older gentleman (over 70) in the exhibitor hall selling old PnP role-playing games and showing polyhedral dice to a 5 year old. I don’t know if it’s more sad that she didn’t know what they were, or more awesome that she was curious enough to ask.

L to R: unimportant moderator, Michael Stackpole, Aaron Allston, Kevin J. Anderson, Timothy Zahn. A guy two rows up had a nerdgasm when Timothy Zahn started to speak.

This guy won the con.  At least that’s what I told him.  And even if he didn’t really, we’d have let him win, cuz we like our arms in their sockets.

This guy marched in the parade dressed as Chewbacca. That's called dedication. And badassery.

I am Jedi, like my father before me.

Start them young. And then come to the dark side cuz we haz cookies.

Don’t wear sandals to Dragon*Con if you don’t like bruised toes.

I was hypnotised by her eyes.

I was hypnotised by her . . . um, eyes.

Steampunk had a large footprint at Dragon*Con. The two best groups were the steampunk Mortal Kombat and the steampunk Star Wars.

My costuming budget could get out of control very, very quickly if Mrs. Vraeden continues to stay home from these things.

A spontaneous chorus of "Bad Horse" broke out soon after this picture was taken.

A klingon selling weapons isn't that strange. A klingon that doesn't have a bat'leth in stock should be flayed alive.

I sat in on a panel that seriously debated the greatest sci-fi ground vehicle of all time. The final match-up was the Adam West-era Batmobile vs. Bond’s Aston-Martin. The Batmobile won. Only nerds think this stuff up and get legitimately angry when their fave loses (sorry, Ark II).1

I feel a disturbance in my . . . er, the Force.

I was standing in line at the Ultrasabers booth as a very pretty young lady was beseeching her beloved to let her add sound to the lightsaber she wanted (which costs about $100 more). Usually, I will side with a bro, but in this case, you can’t get a lightsaber without sound. That’s like getting sushi without rice. Besides, she was spilling out of her Assassin’s Creed costume2, and all I wanted was for her to be happy. Yes, he caved. I hope she made it worth his while (wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more, say no more).

Back in the day, this was considered romantic. Today it's called "stalking".

To the best of my recollections, I did not see one Twilight-style “vampire”. Maybe Cthulu got to them at registration first.

This was the most. Badass. Cylon. Ever. He even had the sound effects built into the suit.

Although this one wasn't bad either.

There was even a Flo (from Progressive) cosplayer.3

Several of my SWTOR toons are lethan twi'leks like this one.

It is always okay to ask someone who is in a costume, “Excuse me, may I get a picture of/with you?” If they didn’t want their picture taken, they wouldn’t be dressed up as Iron Man, Darth Vader, Lara Croft or whatever.

Having said that, if someone is eating, carrying on a private conversation or obviously stopped to take a break, it’s impolite to interrupt them with your camera.

Always tell a child that you like their costume. Even if it’s an off-the-shelf Halloween outfit.

If you look closely, you’ll see the TNG paint scheme to this Mandalorian. Somewhere, Gene Roddenberry is turning over in his grave.

And here she is in a proper costume along with her husband the sandtrooper.

I ran into these guys and asked, "The three of you are on an away mission: Who doesn't make it back?" Immediately, they gave up the asian guy. WTH?

If you learn anything from me, it's this: Don't ask Scarlet Witch if you can motorboat her if her husband (Thor) and kids (Deadpool and Iron Man) are nearby. Trust me. Now, will someone please get me a handful of ibuprofen and the soft cast?

Matt Smith and David Tennent were fine Doctors. But you will never convince me they are better than this guy.

And who doesn't love K-9?

There was a really great panel featuring the art of Jef Murray.  He’s an artist who has been painting and drawing Middle-Earth for many years and he did a chronological depiction of Middle-Earth from the inception of the world up until the Fourth Age.  It was interesting to see what his vision of Middle-Earth was, compared to other artists and the films.

One thing that always strikes me about LOTR is that unlike Star Wars, what Middle-Earth looks like varies from reader to reader.  With Star Wars, since it started out as a film, there is this great visual library and series of reference points.  In the case of LOTR,5 because each person has a different vision of what an ent or a balrog looks like, there were some folks who were really upset that the films didn’t show “their” Middle-Earth.

Since I am not a hardcore Tolkien fan, it was interesting for me to see what he thinks Elrond and Thorin look like.

Yes, that's a G.I. Joe furry. Don't ask. Move along.

Now that Disney owns Star Wars, this is what I expect in the years to come. But maybe with a lightsaber in the hair.

I'm not as upset about the Disney/Star Wars thing as some other people. I wasn't really surprised, though; Star Wars is, after all, a princess movie.

Me: "Excuse me, may I get a picture?" DPR: "As you wish." That made my day.

I would have asked Bo-Katan to take me for a jetpack ride if her husband (a very large man dressed as Thor) hadn't been the one taking the picture.

So who’s up for Dragon*Con next year?

  1. The other entries in the bracket included the AT-AT, the Bluesmobile, K.I.T.T., Black Beauty, the General Lee, Smokey’s Trans Am, the Deathmobile, Doc Brown’s DeLorean, ECTO-1, Viper and the Mach 5.  There were two more, but I can’t remember what they were.
  2. Sorry, no pix. ::sad panda::
  3. Cuz everyone loves Flo.
  4. And by “closely”, I mean, at her boobs.
  5. This also applies to Harry Potter.
  6. What is it with guys who have hawt wives/girlfriends dressing as Thor?

About Vræden

I was suckered into playing an MMO by some friends and have been stuck around ever since. My "main" is a minstrel on the Elendilmir server, but I'm a pretty casual player who likes a good raid every now and then. My healing skills are spectacularly average, and I am known as the Elf Queen of Lousy Healing to my friends. I like long walks on the beach, puppies and mowing down orcs by the dozen. If you see me in-game, say hi or send me a tell. You can also email me or follow me on the Twitter.

There were a lot of Mara Jades this year. They were all very attractive (especially if you like redheads).

Wait, are you telling me there are people out there who don’t like redheads? ;P

Oh, and I forgot to say in my previous comment, amazing job with these two articles, Vræden. I hope you’ve forwarded them to your “bail-out” friends so they can see all the fun they missed out :D

There’s a guy in the first cylon suit and a girl on stilts in the second.

The old cylon centurion was a better costume because it had sound. I heard him from about 50 feet away and the had to go find him and pay my respects.

Awesome costuming. From the Wookie to the Cylon to Dread Pirate Robert’s “As you wish” … and I bet you had folks asking for a closer look at those beautiful light sabers of yours too. I’ve never been to any of the various ‘cons’ but this article was a great peek at how much fun it can be. Thanks for the inside scoop :-).
