There’s really no coherent theme to this article. Just some random thoughts about Dragon*Con and an excuse to post more pix.
Things I noticed this year:
Lots of Scarlet Witches and Harley Quinns.
Not enough Spider-Man cosplayers.
Too many Waldos.
When did Deadpool become such a popular cosplay character? There were like 50 of them together for a picture. We need more slave Leias and scantily-clad buxom women in chain mail that covers nothing, not guys in red body suits carrying guns!
There was an older gentleman (over 70) in the exhibitor hall selling old PnP role-playing games and showing polyhedral dice to a 5 year old. I don’t know if it’s more sad that she didn’t know what they were, or more awesome that she was curious enough to ask.
This guy won the con. At least that’s what I told him. And even if he didn’t really, we’d have let him win, cuz we like our arms in their sockets.
I am Jedi, like my father before me.
Don’t wear sandals to Dragon*Con if you don’t like bruised toes.
Steampunk had a large footprint at Dragon*Con. The two best groups were the steampunk Mortal Kombat and the steampunk Star Wars.
My costuming budget could get out of control very, very quickly if Mrs. Vraeden continues to stay home from these things.
I sat in on a panel that seriously debated the greatest sci-fi ground vehicle of all time. The final match-up was the Adam West-era Batmobile vs. Bond’s Aston-Martin. The Batmobile won. Only nerds think this stuff up and get legitimately angry when their fave loses (sorry, Ark II).1
I was standing in line at the Ultrasabers booth as a very pretty young lady was beseeching her beloved to let her add sound to the lightsaber she wanted (which costs about $100 more). Usually, I will side with a bro, but in this case, you can’t get a lightsaber without sound. That’s like getting sushi without rice. Besides, she was spilling out of her Assassin’s Creed costume2, and all I wanted was for her to be happy. Yes, he caved. I hope she made it worth his while (wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more, say no more).
To the best of my recollections, I did not see one Twilight-style “vampire”. Maybe Cthulu got to them at registration first.
There was even a Flo (from Progressive) cosplayer.3
It is always okay to ask someone who is in a costume, “Excuse me, may I get a picture of/with you?” If they didn’t want their picture taken, they wouldn’t be dressed up as Iron Man, Darth Vader, Lara Croft or whatever.
Having said that, if someone is eating, carrying on a private conversation or obviously stopped to take a break, it’s impolite to interrupt them with your camera.
Always tell a child that you like their costume. Even if it’s an off-the-shelf Halloween outfit.
There was a really great panel featuring the art of Jef Murray. He’s an artist who has been painting and drawing Middle-Earth for many years and he did a chronological depiction of Middle-Earth from the inception of the world up until the Fourth Age. It was interesting to see what his vision of Middle-Earth was, compared to other artists and the films.
One thing that always strikes me about LOTR is that unlike Star Wars, what Middle-Earth looks like varies from reader to reader. With Star Wars, since it started out as a film, there is this great visual library and series of reference points. In the case of LOTR,5 because each person has a different vision of what an ent or a balrog looks like, there were some folks who were really upset that the films didn’t show “their” Middle-Earth.
Since I am not a hardcore Tolkien fan, it was interesting for me to see what he thinks Elrond and Thorin look like.
So who’s up for Dragon*Con next year?
- The other entries in the bracket included the AT-AT, the Bluesmobile, K.I.T.T., Black Beauty, the General Lee, Smokey’s Trans Am, the Deathmobile, Doc Brown’s DeLorean, ECTO-1, Viper and the Mach 5. There were two more, but I can’t remember what they were. ↩
- Sorry, no pix. ::sad panda:: ↩
- Cuz everyone loves Flo. ↩
- And by “closely”, I mean, at her boobs. ↩
- This also applies to Harry Potter. ↩
- What is it with guys who have hawt wives/girlfriends dressing as Thor? ↩
